Amotivational syndrome is a mild psychological condition that leads to or causes a person to be less and less motivated to participate in social situations and activities. The individual retreats, and begins avoiding things they used to embrace. This is unlike depression, where the person isn't depressed, just unmotivated or shows a new lack of apathy.

Some researchers claim that long-term, heavy marijuana use results in amotivational syndrome. Different studies performed conflict on the findings, some saying there is no difference in motivation, while anecdotal evidence says otherwise. It depends on the length of time and frequency of cannabis use.

Amotivational syndrome can be characterized by subtle behavioral changes, personality changes, and potential mental deterioration. This syndrome has been reported all over the world, especially in areas where the most potent preparations of cannabis are consumed.
